At Valmont Driving School, we've helped hundreds of students pass their driving tests across North London. One question we're always asked is: "Which test centre should I choose?" While there's no single best answer, understanding each centre's unique challenges can help you prepare more effectively.
North London Test Centres Compared
Hendon Driving Test Centre
Aerodrome Road, Colindale, London NW9 5JW
Pros:
- Wide variety of road types
- Quiet residential areas nearby
- Good practice for dual carriageways
Cons:
- •Busy A41 junction
- •Can be congested during rush hour
Insider Tip:
Practice the Aerodrome Road roundabout and the tricky right turn at the A41. Book early morning slots to avoid traffic.
Mill Hill Driving Test Centre
Bunns Lane, Mill Hill, London NW7 2DZ
Pros:
- Good mix of urban and suburban roads
- Less congested than central London
Cons:
- •Challenging hill starts

Master hill starts before your test. The Broadway area has several inclines that catch learners out.

Pros:
- Excellent urban driving experience
- Good for building confidence
Cons:
- •Heavy traffic

Know your bus lane rules inside out. Practice the High Road during busy periods to build confidence.
Barnet Driving Test Centre
17 Moxon Street, High Barnet, EN5 5TS
Pros:
- Higher than average pass rate
- Mix of quiet and busy roads
- Good variety of manoeuvres tested
Cons:
- •Can be busy at the High Street
- •Steep hills in places
Insider Tip:
Barnet has some of the best pass rates in the area. Focus on the High Street roundabout and Barnet Hill.
How to Choose Your Test Centre
When selecting a test centre, consider these factors:
- Familiarity: Choose a centre near your usual practice area. If you learn in Highbury or Islington, Wood Green might be a good choice.
- Road types: If you're confident with busy roads, don't shy away from Wood Green. If you prefer quieter areas, consider Barnet or Hendon.
- Availability: Popular centres book up fast. If you need a quick test date, you may need to be flexible.
Our Recommendation
For students learning in Hampstead, Belsize Park, or Swiss Cottage, we typically recommend Hendon or Mill Hill test centres. The routes include similar road types to your training area.
Students from Holloway, Finsbury Park, or Crouch End often do well at Wood Green, as they're already familiar with North London's busier roads.
